THE WHALE AND THE RAVEN - A TRUE COPRODUCTION
August 9, 2017
The Whale and the Raven is an international feature documentary co-production of Red Cedar Films, Off Island Films, busse & halberschmidt Filmproduktion and Topos Film for the National Film Board of Canada and public broadcaster ARTE in Germany.
This venture is a true coproduction on so many levels: writer/director Mirjam Leuze and editor Sandra Brandl are partners with their Cologne-based Topos Film, co-producing with Marcelo Busse of busse & halberschmidt Filmproduktion in Düsseldorf and ZDF/ARTE as broadcaster in Germany with Sabine Bubeck-Paaz executive producing. On the Canadian side, Shirley Vercruysse is executive producing for the NFB with Henrik Meyer of Red Cedar Films and Andrew Williamson of Off Island Films producing together for the first time.
Andrew Williamson and Henrik Meyer have also signed a first-of-its-kind protocol with the council of the Gitga'at First Nation for the filming in the traditional territory in and around Hartley Bay on British Columbia's coast in the Great Bear Rainforest.
The Whale and the Raven is an observational documentary about a place between land and sea and its human and non-human inhabitants, who find themselves entangled in a political and economic power play.
The filming will take place until the end of October and it will involve cameras and microphones on land, above and under water as well as in the air.
